Initially, in 1863, West Virginia adopted its state seal, which later influenced the design of the state coat of arms. In preparation for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, West Virginia unveiled an unofficial flag.
This design featured a white field set against a blue background, adorned with the state coat of arms and state flower. Below the emblem, a ribbon declared “State of West Virginia.” A significant addition to this design was a carmine red border that framed the flag.
