About the Design
“The Old Line State”
Maryland is affectionately known by several nicknames: “Old Line State,” “The Free State,” and “The Chesapeake Bay State.” Despite it’s one of the smallest states in US, Maryland is densely populated and boasts a rich history. Its capital is Annapolis, and its largest city is Baltimore. Maryland also ranks among the wealthiest states in the nation.
So, why is Maryland called the “Old Line State”? This nickname harks back to the War of Independence. During a pivotal battle on Long Island in 1776, a brave Maryland regiment known as the Maryland 400 launched multiple attacks against a larger British force. Their actions held the British at bay, allowing General Washington to safely withdraw his troops to Manhattan. This regiment’s heroic stand, with many soldiers sacrificing their lives, earned Maryland its enduring nickname, commemorating its role in a crucial moment of American history.
