About Memorial Day

The last Monday of May is designated as “Memorial Day” in the United States. According to historical records, Union Civil War veteran and Grand Army of the Republic leader General John Logan established the first official Memorial Day on May 5, 1868.

Every year on this date, new flowers are placed on the graves of Union soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. New York was the first state to make Memorial Day a legal holiday in 1873. It had already been adopted by the majority of northern states by the 1890s.

The Southern states of the United States, on the other hand, continue to observe their own Memorial Day in honor of the soldiers who died fighting for the South during the North-South Civil War over the issue of racial slavery.

Memorial Day’s meaning as a day to honor all American soldiers who died in combat did not become widely accepted until after World War I. However, it wasn’t until 1971 that the United States Congress passed the “National Holiday Act,” officially designating the last Monday in May as a national holiday.

Despite this, many Southern states continue to observe a distinct Memorial Day holiday in honor of Union and Confederate soldiers’ sacrifices during the American Civil War. Every year on April 26, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi observe their respective Memorial Days, while Texas observes it on January 19.

Aside from the historical significance mentioned above, the meaning of Memorial Day for the American people and Vietnamese Americans is also linked to the current state of affairs. This year’s Memorial Day commemoration takes place against the backdrop of ongoing US military operations around the world, waged in the name of freedom, democracy, and the need to defend American interests and security.

According to the US government’s withdrawal strategy, the war in Afghanistan, which began ten years ago, will last until the end of this year. The war’s ultimate goal, however, has not been achieved.

As a result, this year, the American people will remember and express gratitude to the soldiers who died in the struggle for national construction and defense, but they will also remember and express gratitude to the American soldiers who have made and continue to make sacrifices in wars outside the Fatherland with special affection. That is all about Memorial Day’s historic importance for all Americans.

What is Memorial Day Flag?

Memorial Day is a holiday marked as a special day of remembrance and honor since 1968. The United States Congress designates May 25 as Memorial Day, a day to remember those who died while serving in our country’s military services. It usually occurs on the last Monday of the month. On this day, folks hang and fly the Old Glory from house to house, creating a gorgeous red-white-and-blue scene in a block. During national or state remembrance days, American flags are most commonly displayed. But, it’s alright for individuals and organizations to use specialized flags such as police flags, veteran flags, thin red line flags, etc. People can fly it with the American flag as long as it does not detract from the precious value of American Memorial Day. They must, however, follow the memorial day flag protocol.

How long should I fly the flag?

    • 30 days – After the death of the President or Former President.
    • 10 days – For Vice President, Chief of Justice, Retired Chief of Justice, or Speaker of the House.
    • 02 days – For a member of Congress, the day of and the day after.
    • Until burial – For Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Secretary of a Military, Department, Former, Vice President or the Governor of a State.
