Memorial Day Flag — Honor America's Fallen Heroes
On Monday, May 25, 2026, America observes Memorial Day — and a Memorial Day flag displayed at half-staff from sunrise to noon is the most universally recognized way to honor the more than 1 million American service members who have given their lives in defense of the nation. Specifically, 2026 isn't an ordinary Memorial Day. It's the first Memorial Day of America's 250th anniversary year — the Semiquincentennial — making this year's tribute carry weight no Memorial Day has carried in 50 years.
Our Memorial Day flag collection features 22 pages of meaningful designs across every format — from solemn "Remember and Honor" tribute flags to "All Gave Some, Some Gave All" memorial designs, Veteran Kneeling Soldier tributes, half-staff-appropriate Stars and Stripes, and Christ Cross Veterans flags. Furthermore, every design is custom-made to order with Flagwix's 6-month quality guarantee.
Memorial Day 2026 — The Semiquincentennial Tribute Year

Memorial Day 2026 falls on Monday, May 25, 2026 — kicking off the most significant patriotic year in 50 years. Specifically, this is the year America commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence (July 4, 2026). Furthermore, the Memorial Day-to-July-4 window (May 25 through July 5) represents a 6-week stretch of unparalleled patriotic significance for American households.
For 2026 specifically, consider pairing your traditional Memorial Day flag with designs from our 250th anniversary collection:
- Veterans 250 flags — 250 years of American military service tribute
- Eagle 250 flags — bald eagle emblem designs with 1776–2026 framing
- 250 Years of Blessing flags — faith-forward Memorial Day designs
- 250 grommet flags — full flagpole display for Memorial Day weekend
Memorial Day’s meaning as a day to honor all American soldiers who died in combat did not become widely accepted until after World War I. However, it wasn’t until 1971 that the United States Congress passed the “National Holiday Act,” officially designating the last Monday in May as a national holiday.

Despite this, many Southern states continue to observe a distinct Memorial Day holiday in honor of Union and Confederate soldiers’ sacrifices during the American Civil War. Every year on April 26, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi observe their respective Memorial Days, while Texas observes it on January 19.
Aside from the historical significance mentioned above, the meaning of Memorial Day for the American people and Vietnamese Americans is also linked to the current state of affairs. This year’s Memorial Day commemoration takes place against the backdrop of ongoing US military operations around the world, waged in the name of freedom, democracy, and the need to defend American interests and security.
According to the US government’s withdrawal strategy, the war in Afghanistan, which began ten years ago, will last until the end of this year. The war’s ultimate goal, however, has not been achieved.
As a result, this year, the American people will remember and express gratitude to the soldiers who died in the struggle for national construction and defense, but they will also remember and express gratitude to the American soldiers who have made and continue to make sacrifices in wars outside the Fatherland with special affection. That is all about Memorial Day’s historic importance for all Americans.
Memorial Day Flag Half-Staff Etiquette

On Memorial Day, the U.S. Flag Code (Title 4, U.S.C. §§ 1–10) requires a specific half-staff observance unique to this holiday:
- Sunrise to noon: Memorial Day flag at half-staff (lowered to half the pole's height) in mourning
- Noon: Raise flag briskly to full staff in honor of living service members and resilience
- Noon to sunset: Flag remains at full staff
- Sunset: Lower respectfully and store
Importantly, Memorial Day is the only federal holiday with this specific half-staff-then-full-staff protocol. Specifically, this symbolizes mourning followed by resolve — honoring the fallen while affirming the nation's continued strength. For complete Flag Code etiquette during the 250th anniversary year, read American Flag Etiquette for the 250th Anniversary and our Half-Staff Calendar guide.
The flag represents respect, honor, and patriotism. It can be displayed whenever you want throughout the year if you follow these flag rules for Memorial Day:
- It is best to keep the flags in storage on days when the weather is bad.
- The flag on an outdoor flagpole is typically visible only between the hours of sunrise and sunset, though it can be seen at night if illuminated.
So, what custom involving the flag occurs on Memorial Day? Flags should be flown at all times, but especially on the following days.
- New Year’s Day, January 1st
- Federal holidays include Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 20), Lincoln’s Birthday (February 12), Washington’s Birthday (March 20), and Easter Sunday (April 1). (variable) Memorial Day (half-day work until noon), June 14, Father’s Day, the third Sunday of June National Day, July 4, Labor Day action, the first Monday of the month, and Constitution Day, September 17.
- In October, the Monday following Columbus Day
- The 27th of October is Navy Day and Veterans Day.
- Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 11th.
- State departments are closed on December 25th, Christmas Day, and any other dates designated by the President of the United States as the country’s admission date or birthday.
The flag must be displayed at or near every polling location on election days, and at or near every classroom on school days. The flag, which represents the country and its people, deserves to be treated with respect whenever it is flown. The following guidelines are suggested for proper flag display.

Flags at Half-Staff on Memorial Day

On Memorial Day, the flag should be flown at half-staff from dawn until noon, and then briefly at full-staff from dusk until sunset in honor of our fallen soldiers.
On this day set aside to honor the memory of the over a million men and women who have given their lives in defense of our Fatherland, the flag should be raised to half-staff in the morning, lowered to half-staff in the afternoon, and raised again in the evening. It’s time to raise the flag at noon. Each evening, the flag should be slowly and respectfully removed and stored away.
Here are typical reasons for half-staff proclamations:
- Death of principal figures in the U.S. Government
- Death of local government officials
- Death of foreign dignitaries
- Death of a military person
- Death of a civil service person
- Lower to Half-Staff on Memorial Day for Peace Officers
In 1962, May 15 was designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day “in honor of Federal, State, and City officers who died or were disabled in the line of duty.” Unless May 15 falls on May 3, Armed Forces Day, half of the working staff will fly the flag all day. If both holidays fall on a public holiday that coincides with the day the flag is flown, it will be prominently displayed.

What is the Memorial Day Flag?
Memorial Day is a holiday marked as a special day of remembrance and honor since 1968. The United States Congress designates May 25 as Memorial Day, a day to remember those who died while serving in our country’s military services. It usually occurs on the last Monday of the month.
On this day, folks hang and fly the Old Glory from house to house, creating a gorgeous red-white-and-blue scene in a block. During national or state remembrance days, American flags are most commonly displayed.
But, it’s alright for individuals and organizations to use specialized flags such as police flags, veteran flags, thin red line flags, etc. People can fly it with the American flag as long as it does not detract from the precious value of American Memorial Day. They must, however, follow the protocol mentioned above.
How long should I fly the flag?
-
- 30 days – After the death of the President or Former President.
- 10 days – For Vice President, Chief of Justice, Retired Chief of Justice, or Speaker of the House.
- 02 days – For a member of Congress, the day of and the day after.
- Until burial – For Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Secretary of a Military, Department, Former, Vice President, or the Governor of a State.
