The last Monday of May is designated as “Memorial Day” in the United States.
According to historical records, Union Civil War veteran and Grand Army of the Republic leader General John Logan established the first official Memorial Day on May 5, 1868. Every year on this date, new flowers are placed on the graves of Union soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. New York was the first state to make Memorial Day a legal holiday in 1873. It had already been adopted by the majority of northern states by the 1890s.
The Southern states of the United States, on the other hand, continue to observe their own Memorial Day in honor of the soldiers who died fighting for the South during the North-South Civil War over the issue of racial slavery.
Memorial Day’s meaning as a day to honor all American soldiers who died in combat did not become widely accepted until after World War I. However, it wasn’t until 1971 that the United States Congress passed the “National Holiday Act,” officially designating the last Monday in May as a national holiday.
